New Year resolution....why bother?

So it's the New Year and you've got all new resolutions!! New Year resolutions are always kind of funny to me because in many ways it's a new start. A new diet, a new look, new goals, new ambitions. Hey these are all great, I'm all for positive change. The downfall is the disappointment. Did you know that 90% of all New Year resolutions fail? Well aren't I just a Debbie downer?? No really, it's true. I myself have fallen victim of the New Year resolution disappointments.

This year I've tried a different approach to New Year resolutions. I decided back in November what my resolutions would be, and started them early. I believe with any change you make in your life you need to be dedicated and think of it as a lifestyle change. I guess my point is if you are setting new resolutions and have failed in the past, try a different approach this year so you succeed. =)

In the photography community New Year projects are typically either project 365 and project 52. I had to look at this in a realistic way. 365 days of photographs or 1 photograph each week. Seems like a no brainer right? I'll admit it...I'd rather totally veg on certain days than worry about what image to take today and let's face it, that would totally take the fun out of the whole project. So this year I'll be participating in project 52. I'm actually really looking forward to this. I hope you will join me and share what I've seen through my lens each week, what has inspired me and how much my photography will grow.

To all of you who've made New Year resolutions....rock on!!! You can do it!

Military Send-Off | Operation Love Reunited

I've had a few people ask about the military send-off session since I posted a few sneak peeks on my Facebook fanpage so I thought I'd share some more images with you.

Military send-offs are like no other session. They are extremely emotional. There's no foo foo and frill props....just pure, raw emotion.

There's really not much to say except these soldier's are our hero's and so are the families. Thank you for sacrificing so much for our freedom.

The image below is without a doubt my favorite. He realized he had their keys so this was when he ran back to his wife giving the keys back and saying one last goodbye.

And they're off...

All military sessions are complimentary to the families of deployed service men/women.

I was trying to think of what to post today, and instead of posting photos of another session I thought I'd post something a little different.

I think at a young age, little girls can be left with the impression that you must be barbie-sized and picture perfect. While I don't disagree that self-image and being healthy is important I'm referring to the model you see in the magazine that is absolutely flawless. Having a teenage daughter myself I see how she and her friends are always comparing themselves to not only each other but to the celebrity on TV or model in the magazine.

Even though these videos have been shared before, I think it's so important to share again.

Models are not perfect either....
To all of the little girls, teenagers, and women out there....embrace who you are! You do not need to be photoshopped to be beautiful! <3

Peter {1 year} | Canton, Ohio Portrait Photographer

Well I don't even know where to start with this little guy. At just over one year old, Peter has already battled Neuroblastoma. He is off treatment but still goes through a series of partial body castings. Due to the way the tumor pressed on his spine, it is curving and he is far too young for surgery to fix it.

Peter and his parents met me at the studio to get his very first portraits taken. From the moment that we met Peter he was all smiles!! It had been raining daily and was starting to get cold but we were able to sneak a few photos at McKinley Monument Park here in Canton and then head over to the studio.

I am so honored that Peter's parents entrusted me photograph their little man and a huge 'Thank you!' to Kids Cancer Crusade for sending this precious family my way!

Well since I am absolutely horrible at blogging I'm going to make a valid effort to blog something every week, so I thought I'd start with one of my senior reps from this year.

Meet Alex!! Alex will be graduating from Perry High School this year. Alex is one of the sweetest young ladies and has an extremely bright future ahead of her.

I had such a great time photographing Alex and meeting her family! Since Alex was a rep we met a few different times and was able to capture some great images at a variety of locations. These included a park, old railroad station and tracks, hayfield and then finishing up at the studio.

Jayden turns One!!

So I got the pleasure of having this little cutie in today for his 1 year pictures.

We started off at the studio and took a few shots then we ended up heading down to the ball field and railroad tracks by Monument park.

Ok so let me first say I knew it was in the forecast to rain...BUT....I really thought we'd have some sort of warning first. A little sprinkle and then it to really rain, you know like it normally would.

Nope, I was asking too much!! I was able to get a few shots of little man on the tracks and then a few in the grass. His momma wanted him to have some fun with a cupcake too! I'm all for this because I just love messy kid shots. Wouldn't you know he took two bites of that yumm-a-licious cupcake and BAM...downpour!!!! When I say downpour....I mean downpour! Oh and let's not forget the gusting wind that followed!! (I would've grabbed a pic just to show but I had dirt and sand flying at me...lol)

Needless to say we didn't get to finish our session so little cutie pie will be heading back to see me tomorrow to finish his smash cake!

Disney inspired Princess Photoshoot

A little while back I announced that I will be introducing a Disney inspired princess photoshoot. We invited five (5) girls into the studio and they each got to dress up as their favorite Disney princess. The girls ages were from 3 to 6 years old.

My vision for this photoshoot was something fun and special for little girls. The idea is to have a 20-30 minute photo session (or mini session) for little girls who like to dress up and well be a princess. Afterall....all girls are princesses. I will be accepting a small number of mini sessions each month that is geared toward a specific theme.

From left to right, we had Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Belle, & Rapunzel.

Jade came in and became Snow White for a few hours. Jade's hair piece was donated from the wonderfully talented gals from Spare Time Treasures.

Lola was our Cinderella. All of Lola's adorable hair pieces were made by Chrissie from Bell Bells Bowtique

Kim & Mike are getting married in less than 2 weeks and they've decided instead of an engagement session, we are going to be shooting a family session next month. I met with them yesterday to go over some wedding details and we got a few quickies.

I'm so excited for their wedding which will take place in Stow, Ohio and the reception in Richfield, Ohio. They've got some great ideas for wedding portraits and I absolutely cannot wait to document their special day!!!

Getting hitched in Canton, Ohio

Last weekend I had the pleasure of photographing Shelle & Brad's wedding here in Canton, Ohio. I really enjoyed the 'laid back' atmosphere that both Shelle & Brad had on their special day.

Before heading to the ceremony & reception we set out and took some photos. It was a bit chilly but both Shelle & Brad as well as their family were such troopers!!

Here's a few shots we captured...

I love this photo for so many reasons. Looking at Brad and then looking at the single guys getting ready to catch the garter just brings a smile to my face.

The ceremony and reception both took place at Windsor Hall in Canton, Ohio.

Kicking off the wedding season!! {Kelly & Richie} Coshocton, Ohio

This past weekend marked the first of wedding season for us! I can't tell you how much I am honored that Kelly & Richie chose me to document their special day. I had the pleasure of working with them last fall for their engagement photos and they are just so natural in front of the camera.

It's amazing how their love is portrayed with such youth and elegance all at once.

We finished this past Sunday with the final day of Easter mini portraits. It was a short day and once again we had some of the cutest little ones in the studio.

Why we won't use live bunnies or baby chicks at our studio....

As Easter and Spring are quickly approaching many photographers are getting ready for their annual Easter photo sessions. At our studio we have what we call 'Easter Mini Sessions' {as do most other photographers}. These sessions are called 'mini' because they are quick sessions usually ranging from 15-30 minutes instead of a normal session that is normally up to 2 hours long and they are offered at a discounted rate.

Along with this time of year comes the time that many photos are taken with live bunnies and live chicks. Some stores have gone so far as to offer baby chicks dyed in pastel colors for the season. I'm not going to argue that these photos are cute and children look absolutely adorable holding a baby chick or bunny.

Do you think this is really a good idea? Let me put this more in perspective. On a typical day I will book anywhere from 10-20 mini sessions. Now let's multiply that by at least 2 because some of the sessions will have 2 or more children. {Not all, but on average there would be 2} That makes roughly 30-40 children in the studio on a typical mini session day. Now let's imagine you are a bunny or a baby chick???

Some will argue that they use 'trained' bunnies or pets. Have you ever had your pet around 30-40 toddlers in 1 day? My dog is very loving and actually loves children, but he would not appreciate being tossed from child to child just to take a photo. This would terrify him. Children don't always know how to treat an animal. It's not their fault, they are simply too young to understand they may hurt an animal by grabbing, hugging or even picking them up, etc.

Sure, there are pros and cons for using live animals as props. And really if they are in a photo studio, they are indeed used as props. I believe there are far too many cons to justify me bringing live bunnies or live chicks into my studio.

Here's a few for you to consider:

1 - live animals can and often bite children

2 - they often have 'accidents' in the studio as well as on children

3 - baby chicks can carry Salmonella {In fact, in 2007 there was an outbreak because of this}

4 - bunnies/rabbits have been reported to have died from fear when passed around to so many unfamiliar people.

There are alternatives to bringing live bunnies and chicks into a studio and still achieving the same result ~ a cute photo!

Meet Cotton and Caramel and their 3 baby friends. As with many other props and backdrops, we will be using these adorable little guys for Easter minis this year.

If you are not scheduled to have your Easter minis at our studio, please encourage other photographer's to use alternative props for their Easter photo sessions. It is ALWAYS the animals that suffer.

As I was editing photos today I came across some that I forgot I had taken. I could hardly believe this is what I had woken up to a few short weeks ago...

There are still traces of snow and ice outside but the temperature is rising and they are rapidly melting. This is a good sign, a sign that spring is near....

....and I shall happily welcome it!!!

Chatman Photography is ready for 2012 Seniors!

It’s that time of year, and we are looking for FUN juniors interested in becoming senior representatives.

I am looking for juniors who will be seniors in 2012 to help promote my business to their friends.

I will be collecting applications from anyone wanting to be considered as one of my reps.

There will be 1-2 female(s) and 1-2 male student(s) chosen from each local high school.

Chatman Photography is now seeking high school senior representatives for the class of 2012!

If you are currently a high school junior or know a high school junior who might like to be a senior rep, here’s what you need to know.

If accepted, you will be representing Chatman Photography and telling your friends about our Senior Sessions throughout your senior year. For every friend you refer us to, you will receive special discounts and FREE prints on your order.

In order to be a senior rep, you must:

• Have great style, lots of personality and enjoy being in front of the camera.

• Be a current high school junior graduating in 2012.

• Live in and attend school in one of the following counties: Stark, Summit, Tuscarawas or Wayne

• Be available to have one session completed before May 1, 2011.

• Agree to tell your friends and classmates about Chatman Photography and share your senior portraits with them.

• Have your parents or legal guardians sign a model release form.

• Agree to represent ONLY Chatman Photography and use these images as your senior pictures.

What?... a Blog??

I started out tonight with a goal in mind....to start a blog and have somewhat of a design to it. Well thanks to Courtney {Small Beginnings Photography} I now have something up to place my random thoughts and even show a photo or two!!

It's a work in progress, so bare with me through the changes....but it's going to be a fun ride!!
